How Often Should I Post on Social Media?
As a ‘Facebooky Person’ I often get asked by small businesses and friends ‘How Often Should I Post to my Social Channels’. And it is a good question, but not a question that is easy to answer…….
You see, different pages, different platforms, different audiences, and different business goals can affect how and when you post to your social media channels.
And there is certainly no ‘One Size Fits All’ rule either… so take this advice with a little grain of salt and use it as a guide only.
If you Have a Business in:
- Beauty & Fashion
- Real Estate
- Home Decor
- Food Industry
- Photography/Video Services
Then you are in luck because you can afford to post a lot more often on social media without pissing people off. Plus you have a very ‘visual’ business, people want to see inside houses, the latest hairstyles and makeup looks.
If your Facebook Page has 500 followers or less – I would advise you to post on Facebook twice per day, five times per week. Have a look at your Page Insights to see what times most of your audience is looking at your content, and post during this time.
Instagram is also a great platform to consider for this type of business, with a posting schedule of the same – twice per day, five times per week. In fact for this type of business, Instagram is KING!
Hot Tip: You can be tricky and link your Instagram business account to your Facebook page to crosspost.
To be successful in running your social media channels, you do need to interact with your customers when they comment, and also ensure that you respond to any messages received, whether positive or negative. The more you interact, the more people will come back!
What sort of stuff should you post?
- Beautiful images that represent your business
- Photos of customers and staff
- Short punchy videos or professional ‘How To’ videos
- Funny memes and quotes that are related to your industry
- Behind the scenes images
- Make sure you colour-coordinate your images so when scrolling through your feed, it looks uniformly gorgeous!
Over 500 followers should post two to three times per day, seven days a week.
Rule: One complaint about posting too much can be ignored. Five complaints should be listened to. Reduce your posting by one per day and see how you go. Listen to your followers – they will tell you if you are posting too much or not enough!
If you have a Business in:
- Finance and Insurance
- Law
- Consultants
- Trade Businesses (Plumbing, Electrical)
Well sorry, you guys get a bit of a dud deal when it comes to social media…. because ahem… it’s kinda boring (to the general public that is…) So you really need to think outside the square when it comes to attracting people to join your Facebook Page. You can create interest by sharing funny industry related images and videos, and make sure you give your page personality.
How often should you post? Once every two to three days, depending on what sort of content you have. Of course, it can be more often. The trick is to be consistent.
Other social channels (Instagram etc) should be limited to customer and staff photographs or behind-the-scenes images only.
What should you post? Personally, I love to see informational posts from businesses like this. What makes you stand out from everyone else? Blog posts linking back to your website, offers, and deals. Law firms should write about their services e.g. ‘The Steps You Take When Considering Divorce’. Trade services should publish a list of the work they undertake. Blogs are the very best way to promote this type of business, then linking the blogs to your social media pages.
- Informational Blogs
- Changes in your industry that will affect your customers
- ‘How To’ Infographics
Other businesses:
If you are a:
- Butcher, Baker or Candle Stick Maker
You should find a happy medium between the above. Of course, don’t just ‘post for the sake of posting’ – find true content. Every business can be interesting. If you can’t think of something to take a photograph of in your business, ask a friend or even customers what they find interesting…
It could give you a whole new perspective! Customer testimonials are perfect.
But I Don’t Have Time to Post on Social Media?
Sure, I know you are busy. And social media takes time and effort, and most importantly, consistency. There are many free scheduling tools you can use if you can’t get to your social account every day. Alternatively, you can employ someone like Tenacious Digital to do all the hard work for you so you don’t have to think about it!
